Madonna piercing: The Madonna piercing is the exact opposite of the Monroe piercing; it’s a single piercing that appears in the upper lip to the left.
Medusa piercing: Also known as the philtrum piercing, the Medusa piercing appears in the skin above the upper lip at the center.
Labret piercing: The labret piercing is centrally located just below the lower lip.
Jewelry: The labret piercing is one of the more versatile, and it can wear various hoop styles (like captive bead rings, seamless hoops, and clickers), flat back lip studs, and circular barbells.
Vertical labret piercing: Simultaneously similar and quite different to the labret piercing, the vertical labret piercing lives up to its name as a piercing done vertically with an entry hole going through the bottom lip itself and an exit hole going through the labret.
Jewelry: A curved barbell is the only jewelry that can be worn in a vertical labret piercing.
Ashley piercing: An adaptation of the vertical labret, the Ashley piercing is placed on the bottom lip itself. Unlike the vertical labret piercing, the exit hole appears on the inside of the mouth rather than the outside.
Jewelry: You will wear a flat-back labret stud in your Ashley piercing.
Jestrum piercing: With an entry point just above the center top lip and and an exit point the center of the top lip itself, a Jestrum piercing is basically an upside down vertical labret.
Pain and Healing Time
A lip piercing is going to hurt, but it’s tolerable. Like most body piercings, the procedure itself will be quick, and the biggest concern will be the aftercare. Of course, with the sensitive nature of the piercing placement, you’ll need to be extra careful not to snag, bite, or otherwise accidentally bump or move your jewelry in your new piercing. This type of friction can might not only prolong the healing but also cause unnecessary added discomfort.
Brace yourself, because the healing time for a lip piercings is around 2 to 3 months, depending on your body and how you heal.1 “With your mouth, you’re talking, eating, and drinking all day long, so it can be a tough one,” Thompson says. “You’re healing a fistula, and that’s a tunnel of scar tissue being built around the jewelry, so it takes time. The body’s going to seal off the exterior first to prevent bacteria, then it’s going to start healing inwards, so it takes a while.”
As with any piercing, there are important steps to keeping the area clean and preventing infection. Says piercer Cozmo Faris, “Use an alcohol-free mouthwash three to five times a day to flush the inside of the piercing. These flushes should happen anytime after the person eats or drinks. For the outside of the piercing, a sterile saline wound wash such as H2Ocean or Neilmed should be used twice daily to irrigate the area; a five-second saturation should do the trick followed by letting the area air-dry.”
Possibly the most important thing to do to encourage the healing process? Be patient. “As it starts healing outwards, you’ll think it’s healed. But what you don’t realize is it’s still healing internally, so you stop taking care of it, then it regresses,” says Dr. Howard Sobel, founder of Sobel Skin and Attending Dermatologist and Dermatologic Surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. In other words, be diligent about taking care of the area for the first three months, and help out your immune system by eating right, staying hydrated, and avoiding stress.

- Infection: Since you’re dealing with your mouth, which has a lot of bacteria, there’s great potential for infection. And since lip piercings are often on the outside of your skin and inside of your mouth, you’ll want to keep both ends of the piercing clean. Brush your teeth after every meal and use alcohol free mouthwash
- Swelling and inflammation: “While some swelling is normal, proper aftercare of the piercing will keep it under control and help it heal,” says Sobel. If you smoke cigarettes, try to stop. “Alcohol and smoking will cause more inflammation,” Thompson says. “If you can’t abstain for a few weeks after getting it pierced, I’d say wait for a time when you can.

Lots of factors influence the poor conditioning of our hair. These factor, influence how often we must wash out hair for proper growth and nourishment of your hair. They include but not limited to the following:
1. Hair Oil
Oil is the biggest culprit behind what we consider “dirty” hair. It can leave hair limp and clumpy. How much oil you produce depends on your age,, sex, and environment. Children and older adults do not produce as much sebum as teenagers or adults in their 20s and 30s. While you may have once struggled with an oily scalp, your scalp can slowly become drier as you age.
“There are some people with really fragile hair that becomes easily damaged with the act of washing. Those people might want to wash their hair every other week,” says Hughes. “There is an enormous range of how often a person might need to wash their hair.”
Some people produce enough oil to need to wash their hair daily, but they are not the majority, according to Hughes. Most people only produce enough oil to wash every couple of days.
Straight and thin hair needs to be washed more frequently than curly or wavy hair. Straight hair is easily coated by sebum, which means it looks greasy much faster. Thick, wavy, or curly hair tends to be dry since the oil doesn’t coat the strands as easily. Sebum is an important part of beautiful, well-defined curls, because curly hair needs more moisture to stay soft and prevent frizzing.
African-American hair needs to be washed the least. Overwashing, especially with harsh shampoos, can damage hair and lead to hair shortage, especially when combined with chemical treatments or hair styles like tight braids that tug at the roots.
No one is surprised that a sweaty workout can mess up your ’do. How much you sweat is a big factor in how frequently you need to wash, or at least rinse, your hair. Sweat can spread sebum and make your hair look and feel dirty. It can also cause your hair to smell less than fresh. Hughes recommends shampooing after sweaty workouts and anytime you wear a hat or helmet for extended periods of time.
4. Physical dirt or pollen
Gardening, cleaning, and other messy tasks may be cause for a wash. Dirt, dust, and pollen can all get trapped on the hair. Not only will these make your hair look dull, but they can also reduce allergies
5. Styling products
Styling products can build up on your hair and scalp and lead to irritation and damage. Frequent or heavy product can lead to wash your hair more frequently than if you skip the creams and sprays.
Reasons you should not over wash your hair.
Shampoo is designed to clean the scalp and remove excess oil. But if it’s overused or if you work it all the way down the length of your hair, shampoo can damage your hair. Shampoo strips the important oils the scalp produces and can leave the hair and scalp too dry. To prevent this, only shampoo the roots of your hair. The ends will be cleaned when you rinse the shampoo out of your roots.
“I see more problems with people overwashing their hair than you would think,” says Hughes. “If people didn’t rely on these detergents so much the quality of people’s skin would probably be better, especially as people get older. People in their 40s and 50s who are still washing their hair and scrubbing themselves as if they were teenagers are really damaging their skin. It takes a long time to fix that.”
Dandruff and shampoo
Your dandruff may actually be a sign of overwashing. Dry hair, itching, and persistent flaking or dandruff are all symptoms of an overly dry scalp. But that doesn’t mean we should all banish washing our hair forever.
“There’s a feeling out there that some of the natural hair oils are helpful for the hair and that’s certainly true, especially for people with curly hair,” says Hughes, “but you don’t need all of the oil you are producing on the hair all the time.”
Shampooing less often is more of a personal preference. Some people may experience itching when they wash less frequently. But for the most part, shampooing less will only change the appearance and feel of the hair.
